Every year, our York Delivery Centre welcomes a new group of interns, and this summer was no different. Over the past weeks, we’ve had the pleasure of working with Luchia and Alex. As we round up the 10 weeks, we asked them to reflect on their time at Finyx including any surprises, favourite moments and challenges – as well as providing some tips for future interns.

First Impressions - what surprised you most about working in a fast-paced SME environment?

LF: What surprised me the most was the level of autonomy you’re given from day one. For example, I was tasked with developing a client proposal from scratch, focused on implementing Experience Level Agreements (XLAs). This was my first experience working on a project like this, which required me to coordinate effectively, and deliver a high-quality slide deck under tight timelines. This experience highlighted how quickly decisions are made in an SME and reinforced the importance of adaptability in delivering impactful work.

AH: What stood out most was the accessibility of people across all levels of the firm. From the analyst level to the CEO, everyone was open to sharing insights and advice, which accelerated my learning and gave me a deeper understanding of Finyx.

What’s one skill you developed here that you didn’t expect to?

LF: One unexpected skill I developed during my internship was advanced data analysis and structuring in Excel. I worked on a project supporting an Environmental Management System (EMS) workshop. This involved compiling and analysing data from public sector bids to identify environmental trends and social value weightings.

My responsibilities included reviewing extensive spreadsheets to extract relevant questions and responses as well as categorising clients that prioritised environmental considerations. To ensure accuracy, I leveraged pivot tables to track whether each bid included specific questions.

This experience strengthened my technical proficiency in Excel and taught me how to transform raw data into actionable insights.

What was your favourite project or moment from the internship?

AH: My favourite project was working within the AI team at Finyx. The collaborative environment fostered creativity and allowed me to take ownership of my work. I valued Finyx’s laissez-faire approach, which gave me the freedom to explore ideas and contribute solutions that delivered real value to the project.

What’s one challenge you faced, and how did you overcome it?

LF: One of the biggest challenges during my internship was managing multiple high-priority tasks in a fast-paced environment. I worked on everything from ISO9001 templates and AI policy development to IDE board research and client bid support. Balancing these responsibilities was tough at first, but creating an internship tracker helped me stay organised and meet deadlines. This experience really improved my time management and taught me the value of structured planning and adaptability in consulting.

What did you learn about how SMEs can harness technology to transform their operations?

AH: Throughout the internship, I explored how SMEs can leverage accessible tools, such as Microsoft’s suite, to drive efficiency and scalability. At Finyx, I saw how solutions like Power Automate streamline workflows, and I had the opportunity to design and build custom SharePoint sites that enhanced collaboration and optimised internal operations.

What did you discover about the consulting industry whilst at Finyx that surprised you most?

AH: During my time at Finyx, I gained a real appreciation for the varied and evolving nature of consulting. I worked on multiple projects simultaneously, from drafting bid proposals to contributing to client-facing engagements, collaborating closely with various teams across the firm. This experience honed my ability to adapt quickly, manage competing priorities, and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment.

Any advice for future interns - what would you tell someone starting at Finyx next week?

LF: Be proactive and ask questions - everyone at Finyx is approachable, and early feedback really helps. Get involved in as many projects as you can, even outside your role. That’s where you’ll learn the most, build confidence, and make a real impact during your internship.

AH: Embrace the learning culture at Finyx. It’s a rapidly expanding, dynamic consultancy where you’re surrounded by subject-matter experts across diverse areas, all eager to share their knowledge. With countless opportunities to get involved, it’s an ideal environment to develop your skills and grow alongside the organisation.
